FWIW, here is an FB post I copied from long-time friend who lives in Pasadena, not exactly sure where but it looks like his place was spared, for now anyway. Posted at about 8:30 p.m. Pacific time Friday night: "Smoke partially lifted and cleared today. For those who lost homes, businesses, and other parts of their community, it is actually worse than reported. Everything is covered in gray ash; a black/white scene of destruction in a formerly colorful community. The smell lingers, and the threat continues (3% containment). It will take years to rebuild. The sound of moving forward has yet to start. Shock is the prevailing mood. It is difficult to know what to do. Through the distance of TV, I have watched this happen in other communities. Now I understand much better. I feel like one of the lucky ones, but that does not feel good in this context. It all happened very quickly, and the answers are coming very slow...if at all. Thanks to all who reached out. Family and community are ultimately our most important and lasting connections."

This was a wonderful discussion about California and a welcome chance to process the terrible loss from these fires. Having grown up in San Diego, attended college in Claremont CA, and spent postdoctoral years at UC Irvine, I have a Southern California orientation. My family frequently exchanged visits with friends in Pacific Palisades, I played volleyball on Manhattan Beach and my first job was at Santa Monica Hospital and Medical Center, I had a wonderful post college violin teacher in Brentwood. I think of all these things, the people, places and growth that I gained from living there. This post provided welcome opportunity to remember these times in light of past experiences. It’s overwhelming that there are so many citizens that will be doing a hard reset on their lives and there will inevitably be many changes that we cannot anticipate. I hope there will be a sense of mutual support for fellow Americans that brings about positive outcomes during rebuilding.
