So yesterday by husband announced that the business he’d built *literally with his hands* will be closing on December 15, and I had some thoughts… (audio)
So sad to see you go though this. I was an infrequent customer at the Beaumont neighborhood location, years ago. Now in AZ and so happy.
I suggest you bring your roasters here. Great tax structure, low property and business taxes. We could use a great roaster here in North Peoria. We have all the national chains but some locals are actively promoting our area because we NEED independent specialty shops & restaurants, and this was pre-covid. https://www.facebook.com/upperwestsidephx We have great charter schools here too.
We are now 100% open, but businesses have the option to require masks. Typically only when walking about. Restaurants have been 50% open for many months.
I read about Ristretto in Sean Benish's book about urban cycling in Portland. I wanted to know more as I cycled past during Seattle to Portland in 2018 and so I Googled and here I am. So sorry to hear that the business is closing. The great irony, of course, is that those who cancel others in the end are only cancelling themselves.
I’ve been flowing your work for a while now, and was heartbroken to hear your husband is closing his business. I am so glad you found friends who would sit with you in the hard times. Good luck to you both and take care!
I'm a former coworker of Hillary's who's been following your work through the years. I'm also a flaming liberal. And I also deplore the restrictive pall descending on discourse from the left. Politics is one thing. How people behave toward each other is another. You your husband didn't deserve this. Have subbed to your Substack and wish you the absolute best.
Hey Monica, how are you? Yes, that was a bit of a mess, the fallout, just nuts. One thing that it's (maybe positively?) done is reify my conviction to never shut up about this stuff. Hopefully not in an annoying way! Just, not letting it lie. I am in very good company, with the Bari Weisses and Katie Herzogs (Blocked & Reported podcast) and Fifth Column podcast dudes of the world. We are just going to keep talking/making content. Thank you for subbing! x
Would love to see/hear you chat with Caitlin Flanagan about, well, anything ... but in particular Joan Didion, whose new collection of old essays comes out next month.
