The Anarchist Dreams: Dispatch From the DNC
Amid hopes for peace, chaos erupts as protesters clash with police and each other
My second story for Reason on the goings-on outside of arena at Democratic National Convention here in Chicago just dropped. Yesterday’s piece was “Muted Outrage and Aspirational Crowds: Dispatch From the DNC.” The lede:
Depending on how you feel about protesters, there's good news or bad news about the estimated number expected to converge on Chicago this week for the 2024 Democratic National Convention: 30,000. Either way, you would not be faulted for thinking the number is possibly aspirational, based on the fewer than 50 who showed up yesterday for an outdoor event and press conference organized by the Coalition to March on the Democratic National Convention.
This inflating of the number turned out to be correct, boy did it, which did not make the march’s organizer, Hatem Abudayyeh, very happy, as my colleague Olivia Reingold over The Free Press captured on video (scroll down).
Today’s piece, “The Anarchist Dreams: Dispatch From the DNC,” really rips, you’re basically coming along with me for the ride, including be-hooded boys ducking my questions ("I tried to interview the young men, but they had the same response to every question: 'We don't talk to media.' It's a catchall phrase common among young protesters, the eyes above their masks growing not bolder but shakier with each iteration…") and the anarchist who sweetly tells me, “If we can dream it, we can do it!" right before we took a light pummeling from the cops. You can read the whole thing at Reason, AND I’d really appreciate you becoming a paid subscriber so I can keep doing this reporting, which I love so so much.
Want in on the action? Come on then.
Anarchists are the cockroaches at every Democratic Party picnic.
