Paloma Media Week 3!
Mike Nesmith (yay!), Hillary Clinton (nay!), and the best way to best your enemies
Good Sunday morning from upstate New York, where last night I heard the geese flying south after midnight. I hope your Saturday night was as wild!
We ran so much good content last week – Week 3! – starting with a link to the Reason video “Mad Genius: The Reason Founding Story,” narrated by Matt Welch and based on his moving article on Lanny Friedlander. I read my article about visiting serial killer John Wayne Gacy on death row just before his execution, and Scott Ross wrote about the potential 2022 Olympic boycott and the best way to best your enemy. The podcast “Ask a Jew” premiered what will be a running feature, “People You Thought Were Jewish” (I won’t give away their inaugural guest but to say, she and I share a social security number). Bill Schulz’s video series, “Running Commentary,” visited John Lennon’s old haunts; I was less than impressed with Hillary Clinton’s “MasterClass” announcement, and “Iowahawk” Dave Burge made a case for Monkee and producing dynamo Mike Nesmith, who died on Friday, being “a real life candidate for most interesting man in the world.” (I agree! And if he’d only ever written this one song, he’d have my heart.)
And do not sleep on our Person of the Day(s)! This week’s nano-profiles included, among others, a party-girl prime minister, a bloodied Hungarian water polo player, a ballplayer who smoked heaters in the dugout, and an anonymous Coast Guardsman who jumped from a helicopter into an icy river, as one… does?
Starting tomorrow on Paloma Media, it’s New York Week! With a 17th century pirate tale written by someone who himself was held captive by pirates for years, teenage rampaging in the 1970s, and the present-day swashbuckling required of the city’s restaurateurs to stay open during Covid.
Thank you for the early buy-in – we want more of you! Link us on the social medias, send us your tips, mash a support button… and for those who already have: Get us yer song requests, Matt and I are recording this week xx
